Bears Sign Justin Fields in 4-year Contract

Last week, the Chicago Bears signed rookie first-round draft pick Justin Fields to a fully guaranteed, four-year, $18.8 million contract. Yesterday was the start of the Bears’ mandatory minicamp at Halas Hall. After the first day, Chicago Bears coach Matt Nagy informed the press that Fields would not start the season opener on September 12 against the Los Angeles Rams.

Instead, 33-year-old veteran QB Andy Dalton will be the starting quarterback. The Bears signed Andy Dalton to a one-year, $10 million deal. In order to gain the rights to select Fields, the 22-year-old rookie from Ohio State, Bears general manager Ryan Pace traded the Number 20 overall pick, a fifth-round pick, and a first- and fourth-round pick for the 2022 draft to the New York Giants. This move allowed the Bears to trade up nine spots in the 2021 draft, where they were able to select Fields at Number 11 overall.

At Ohio State, as the starting QB for 2020 and 2019, Fields amassed a 20-2 record. Fields made 68.4 percent of his passes for 5,373 yards. He also had 63 touchdowns, nine interceptions, 867 yards rushing yards, and 15 touchdowns on 218 carries.

We are excited for the start of the Bears season in September and are looking forward to both of our new Chicago QBs! If you want to check out some more Chicago facts and history, take a look at our other Strellis and Field blog posts, which can be found here.
