Cubs Throw Record Breaking Combined No-Hitter

Yesterday, the Chicago Cubs threw their first combined no-hitter in Cubs’ franchise history against the Los Angeles Dodgers. This is the seventh no-hitter this season, the most ever in MLB history before July 1st. The last time there were seven no-hitters in an MLB season was in 1900, when the modern era of baseball began.

A combined no-hitter is when more than one pitcher contributed to the no-hitter. There have been only 15 combined no-hitters in MLB history. Cubs Pitcher Zach Davies started off the game, pitching six spotless innings. He was then followed by Ryan Tepera, Andrew Chafin, and Craig Kimbrel, who all pitched one inning each, respectively.

What made this combined no-hitter so unique is that all three reliever pitchers didn’t know the Dodgers were hitless until after they pitched. The confusion in the bullpen was attributed to the eight walked Dodger batters, which was the most walks in a no-hitter since the Arizona Diamondbacks walked eight batters in a no-hitter against the Tampa Bay Rays in 2010.

The Cubs are on the road until they return to Wrigley Field to face off against the Philidelphia Phillies on July 5th. If you want to check out some more Chicago facts and history, take a look at our other Strellis and Field blog posts, which can be found here.
