President Joe Biden Visits Chicago, Crystal Lake
President Joe Biden arrived in Chicago this morning to visit McHenry County College in Crystal Lake, IL. President Biden is visiting the college to promote his American Families Plan and “Build Back Better” agenda, which will focus on children and education. This is the first time that a sitting president has visited Crystal Lake, IL.
The President also met with Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle as he arrived at Chicago O’hare International Airport. Lightfoot and Preckwinkle each conversed with the President separately on the tarmac after he got off of Airforce One and before he boarded Marine One for a helicopter ride to Crystal Lake.
Mayor Lightfoot said she planned to discuss rising gun violence in Chicago and gun control with the President. The President’s visit, unfortunately, follows a violent Fourth of July Weekend where over 100 people were shot in the City of Chicago and just hours after two federal agents and a Chicago police officer were shot.
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki delivered a statement to the press regarding gun violence in Chicago. According to Psaki, The Department of Justice is going to be working with five cities nationwide, Chicago being one of them, in launching a gun trafficking strike force. Psaki also said Chicago will be a part of a community violence intervention collaborative. The collaborative involves 15 jurisdictions across the United States that aims to help jurisdictions invest in “proven evidence-based, community-based strategies.”
