3 Million Vaccines Flew From Chicago to Guatemala in US Effort to Share Doses
Yesterday, three million COVID-19 vaccinations left Chicago O’Hare Airport on an American Airlines aircraft for Guatemala as a part of the U.S. effort to share vaccine doses. This occurred the same day Chicago readded Florida, Louisiana, Nevada, and the U.S. Virgin Islands to the City’s COVID-19 travel advisory, meaning that unvaccinated travelers from these locations are advised to obtain negative COVID-19 test results 72 hours before their arrival or quarantine for ten days after arriving in Chicago.
Yesterday morning, three million Moderna COVID-19 vaccines, weighing 63,000 pounds, arrived in Chicago from a distributor in Kentucky. The vaccines were cooled with gel packs as they flew to Guatemala City on a nonpassenger plane with only two pilots and two mechanics. American Airlines has donated its flying services to deliver vaccines to Guatemala once before. Earlier in July, American Airlines transported 1.5 million doses to Guatemala City.
