Health Tips for Flu Season

February is right in the thick of flu season. This year there are even more concerns about staying healthy in light of the recent outbreak of Coronavirus. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the best way to prevent seasonal flu is with an annual flu shot. Therefore, Strellis and Field wanted to share some tips on how to stay healthy and safe this flu season!

Wash your hands It is imperative to be repetitively washing your hands with soap and water throughout the day. When washing your hands you should be scrubbing for at least 20 seconds. An easy way to keep track of time is by singing “Happy Birthday” twice. If you do not have access to soap and water, use a hand sanitizer that has at least 60% alcohol in it. Hand sanitizers may not be as effective as hand washing if your hands are visibly dirty or if there are harmful chemicals on your hands.

Avoid close contact Try your best to stay away from people who are sick. Also, if you are sick or are starting to feel unwell stay home to avoid infecting others. If you are feeling under the weather, it is best to not travel.

Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth As previously mentioned, make sure you are constantly washing your hands. Even with washed hands, it is smart to not touch your face as this is how germs can be easily spread.

Clean and disinfect It is important to clean off and disinfect objects and surfaces that are frequently touched. Your phone and keyboard are covered in germs, so remember to clean them off with disinfecting wipes often.

Cover your cough Germs are easily spread through coughing and sneezing, so make sure you cover your cough and sneeze with tissue paper. It is also a good idea to cough into your elbow so germs do not spread from your hands.

Healthy habits In addition to these preventative tips, it is crucial to maintain an overall healthy lifestyle. It is ideal to get 8-10 hours of sleep a night so you do not get worn down. Try to drink about 2 liters of water a day, which is roughly eight 8-ounce glasses in order to be properly hydrated. Also, do not forget to stay active and eat nutritious foods filled with vitamins!

We hope these tips help keep you healthy, safe and full of energy this flu season. Check out some of our other Strellis and Field blog posts for more information and tips!
