Chicago Launches Snapchat Mask Initiative

Earlier this week, the City of Chicago released a new Snapchat lens that aims to encourage Chicagoans to wear masks. The augmented reality Snapchat lens which is the first of its kind can only be unlocked when the Snapchat user is wearing a mask. Snapchat is an extremely popular app amongst Millennials and Generation Z, the same age demographic that has experienced the biggest rise in COVID-19 cases in Chicago.
The city worked with Snapchat and the advertisement agency Ogilvy to design this augmented reality lens that is said to be “quintessential Chicago” according to city officials. Furthermore, the lens aligns with the City’s current public health awareness initiatives and the ‘We Are All ONE Team: Team Up, Mask Up’ campaign. The lens can only be accessed when Snapchat users show that they are wearing a mask. The lens has hidden surprises nicknamed “Easter Eggs” that can only be found through unique codes.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the virus is spread through respiratory droplets that are produced when people cough, sneeze, talk, or raise their voice. To follow the recommendations of the CDC, next time you leave the house, make sure to stay socially distant, wash your hands, and wear your mask over both your nose and mouth. Once you are wearing your mask, try out the new lens and let us know what you think! If you are interested in reading more Strellis and Field tips and informational blogs you can find them here.
